You’re being purposely obtuse. This was not about “the company” “stealing” from someone. It was about Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft having distinct visual styles.

At some point SC2 looked a lot more Warcrafty, but Blizzard didn’t want to mess with the Korean SC audience, so they kept the game looking like Starcraft, playing like it too.

Diablo didn’t have such luck. It got generic, streamlined to all shit, took on WoW visual style. In a sane world I shouldn’t have to explain why that’s bad.

spoufy1 says:

Visuals don’t deter gameplay. You can remake original mario in complete hd new age graphics and it still wouldn’t be better than the original. With how many video games are out there nowadays and how many different styles there is bound to be overlap. So you have a visual complaint about 2 classes? There are still plenty of others. Whom all have new custom visuals. Only a couple of things are overlapped. Either way it is their game(s), if they reuse an idea who cares? Lots of games have clones.

shihonage says:

You can defend each complaint individually – yeah, blink was in Diablo1. Yeah, visuals alone don’t make or break the game within a certain threshold of acceptability. Yeah, losing satanic imagery and Judeo-Christian references doesn’t make or break a game by itself. Yeah, no “builds” can be ok if the game still has atmosphere…

But in the end, what is a game, if not a sum of its parts? Take away too many, and it’s not the same game anymore. And that’s exactly what happened to Diablo3.

haha i just read the whole argument seeing that everyone hated someone but no one disliked you…and THIS? This started an argument?

thsi game better be good, otherwise it’s gonna suck.

Captain6Howdy says:

People take good ideas and put there spin on them all the time , it’s nothing new and has been done in video games since video games existed. If developers didn’t “rip off” or “steal” ideas as you put it, we wouldn’t have great games , movies , music or pretty much any form of entertainment out in the world.

Andreilg3 says:

also if you compare starcraft to warhammer 40k (they also pay A LOT of royalties for that to GW as well) then you’ll see how zerg and marines are direct rips with absolutely no imagination from Tyranids and Space Marines. dicksuck blizzard blindy more, and im a musician so yes I know creation is built upon the ruins of our ancestors, when in the world did I say taking from others is bad?

Matty88444 says:

I have an exam the day after Diablo release, seriously considering skipping that exam.

SauceNinja says:

You keep using that word, “straw man”. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

SauceNinja says:

true, and it’s also got a pretty rigid range. A lot of spells that were ported from diablo 2 to warcraft (and then world of warcraft) were fine for a “you are the chosen one” single player ARPG, but were ridiculously overpowered for an mmo and had to be heavily scaled.

SauceNinja says:

if this was a legitimate complaint, pretty much every fantasy game ever would have some serious answering to do for first edition D&D

NewRoki says:

he’s been trying to convince me that he doesn’t have any knee-jerk reactions to world of warcraft. We haven’t even talked about the enrage timer, he’s upset about graphics or something. I hope you find the irony as delicious as I do.
